Between Circumstances
Régis Souto · Oil on canvas · 36 × 36 in (91.4 × 91.4 cm) · 2026
This painting is an X-ray of what we recognize in the mirror. There is the self you find too strange to show anyone, the alien in each of us. There is the self that carries an addiction, the one that sometimes grows sad, and the one that takes care of others, knows its own potential and keeps everything in order.
Written on the canvas: Minha pele é poeira de estrelas, my skin is stardust. I think of this self, so multiple, so important to itself, made of the same matter as the canvas. When it sees itself as stardust, it can contemplate its own smallness before the immensity of the divine universe.
