Source Resolution

Régis Souto & Patrick Stevens

a converging-media exhibition · paintings + digital works · free · daily 10am–7pm

//01 — source resolution (n.)

The pixel count of the original file: the image as it was first made, before anything is stretched, compressed or converted. Push a picture past it and it starts to break into its parts.

Source Resolution brings together two artists working on either side of that breaking point. Patrick Stevens builds images out of the screen: digital manipulation, abstraction, colour turned up past comfort. Régis Souto builds them out of matter: heavily textured gesso, layers of coloured pencil, gouache, acrylic and marker, and oil as the final skin.

Their shared unit is the square, the pixel in one practice and the canvas in the other. Their shared question: what is the original? A file, a body, a self.

How many of you live in one body?

Invitation by Régis Souto: three standing figures, arms over each other's shoulders, against a silver textured ground
invitation · mixed media on canvas

There is the you who goes to work. The you who makes something of your own. The you inside a relationship, and the you among friends. None of them is the false one, and all of them live in the same body.

In these paintings, that crowd becomes a single figure. Arms multiply around one torso, holding, steadying, pushing away. The black line does not close the silhouette. It marks the seams where one self hands the body over to another.

Each work gathers around a point of light on one of the body’s energy centres. Stand in front of one and notice where it lands in you. Which of your selves lives there? Which one do you hold close, and which one do you keep pushing away?

One body walked through the door. How many of you came with it?

Too bright, all at once

Patrick Stevens works in digital art and image manipulation. He takes images apart and rebuilds them, lays abstraction over the recognizable, and pushes colour to a saturation that is almost too much.

He treats the conventions of the image as material to break. His work asks viewers to question what they are looking at, and then why they believed it.

For Source Resolution he draws on his first year in Toronto: relearning how to be around people after a breakup, and feeling like a fish out of water.

Digital collage by Patrick Stevens: a small blue figure at the centre of an explosion of pixel blocks and saturated colour
Digital collage by Patrick Stevens: a huge eye over a red flower, a tiny figure standing between them
Digital collage by Patrick Stevens: a lone figure walking toward a pixelated arch in a desert
Digital abstraction by Patrick Stevens: a field of pixel blocks in saturated colour
